My Mother’s Hospital Visit (English)
2026/04/14
On Wednesday, April 8th, I took my mother to the hospital for her regular checkup.
We arrived before 8:30 AM.
At that hour, the B1 floor of the multi-story parking garage was already full — no spots left.
The hospital opens at 8:30 AM.
The plan was to go through urine tests, blood tests, and an ECG, then make the rounds through internal medicine, vascular surgery, cardiology, and dermatology.
Internal medicine appointment was at 9:30 AM.
By the time we finished the blood, urine, and ECG tests and reached internal medicine, it was already 9:50 AM — past the appointment time 😂
Even with a reservation, waiting 40 to 50 minutes is totally normal 😩
One thing after another, and we finally finished dermatology just after 1:00 PM.
But then — an emergency MRI was needed. No reservation, so it would take time.
We grabbed lunch at the hospital’s convenience store and waited for the MRI.
We were called sooner than expected — what a relief.
In the examination room, we were asked to read and sign a consent form. Then my mother had to take off her clothes and change into a hospital gown.
That part was tough.
There was no proper changing area for my mother in her wheelchair — just a small space divided by a curtain. Getting changed was really difficult.
I guess that’s just the reality of an older general hospital.
The MRI itself took about 40 minutes and finished without incident.
We were told results would come the following week, and we left the hospital.
My Number Card Expiration
When the hospital scanned my mother’s My Number Card, a message appeared saying the expiration date was approaching!
We headed to city hall on the way home to get it renewed.
When we arrived at the My Number Card renewal floor, perhaps because of the area, there seemed to be an unusually large number of foreign nationals.
Also — maybe it was just me — but the smell on that floor was pretty strong 😣
We took a number and waited about 30 minutes before finally starting the renewal process.
After the new card was issued, we had to set a PIN and certificate password. It took a full hour before the card was in our hands, and by then my mother was exhausted.
From now on, I’ll go to a branch office for renewals. Hopefully that’ll save some time.
Before heading to city hall, I had dropped off a prescription at the pharmacy, so we stopped to pick up the medicine on the way — and didn’t get home until after 5:30 PM.
Total time actually seeing doctors today: about 1 hour. Time dealing with city hall staff for the card renewal: about 15 minutes.
Total waiting time today: roughly 7 hours. Travel time: about 1 hour.
Isn’t there anything that can be done about all this waiting?
The doctors and nurses all seem to be working hard, but there just seem to be too many patients per doctor.
I really think hospitals and city offices need a fundamental overhaul of their systems.
The Phone Call
After 6:00 PM, I got a call from the cardiologist who had recommended the MRI!
“I hadn’t told you the results yet,” he said.
“Wait — a nurse told us results would come on the 15th, so we came home thinking that,” I replied.
“Is that so?” he said.
Apparently the results weren’t great, and he asked us to see a neurosurgeon as soon as possible.
The next day, I called and made an appointment for Friday the 10th at 10:00 AM.
How bad can it be? For a doctor to call directly like that…
Can’t it wait until the 15th? I’m worried.
Wrap-Up
After a full day of waiting at the hospital and waiting at city hall — I’m exhausted from all the waiting.
The air conditioning in both the hospital and city hall was cranked up too high. It might be comfortable for elderly people, but for a 57-year-old man, it was a bit too warm. I felt completely zoned out. (lol)
“Maybe I’ll stick a cooling patch on my forehead next time.” 🤣
But honestly, the ones more tired than me were my mother and my wife.
I need to think of a more efficient way to handle all this. I’d love to see AI used to streamline the process.
The Digital Agency has been pushing My Number Cards on everyone, but then you can’t renew without showing up in person, and they won’t hand it over to anyone but the cardholder themselves. What a hassle.
The old health insurance card was just fine, wasn’t it? That’s all for today 😆
What will they tell us on the 10th? What’s going to happen?
