As I wrote yesterday, today was the day of my mother’s test. To give the result first: it turned out that she does not need surgery, and for now I am relieved. Still, looking back at the whole day, it swung between highs and lows.

My car came back after four weeks

This morning I went to the repair shop to pick up my car. I left it there on August 1st, so it had been about four weeks.

Sitting in my own seat again, starting the engine, pulling away. It really is good. My hands remember the wheel, my body remembers how the seat sinks. The loaner car was not bad, but my own car is where I settle.

I commute an hour and a half each way, from Akai in Kawaguchi to Minami-Kurihashi, so the car is part of my daily life. Four weeks without it felt unsettled. I am simply glad to have it back.

At that point, I thought today was going to be a good day.

2 p.m., to Saiseikai for my mother’s SPP test

At two in the afternoon came my mother’s SPP test. We went to Saiseikai to have the black wound under her right big toe examined.

An SPP (skin perfusion pressure) test measures whether blood is properly reaching the skin at the end of the foot. When blood flow to the feet weakens, small wounds heal poorly and can get worse, so the circulation has to be checked with actual numbers.

The wound was in exactly the same place as three years ago. Honestly, I kept imagining the worst. In the worst case she would need major surgery again, and I could not stop wondering whether my 85-year-old mother, at care level 3, could endure that a second time.

The result: not bad enough for surgery

To put the conclusion first: her blood flow is weak, but not bad enough to require surgery.

I was genuinely relieved. After sitting in the waiting room imagining the worst, hearing that one sentence let the tension out of my shoulders.

It is not entirely good news, though. From now on she has to go to the hospital every month for treatment of the wound and follow-up observation. And we were told to come in immediately if the wound grows even slightly, or if anything looks wrong.

I have a feeling that my mother’s blood vessels are only just holding on. Perhaps this time we simply got through it. That is exactly why I want her seen every month, so we do not miss any small change.

One thing I would say to others caring for a parent: the sole of the foot is a place you cannot see yourself, and the person may not say it hurts. We only got to today’s test because we happened to notice it. It may be worth glancing at their toes and soles after a bath. And if anything concerns you, ask your doctor rather than deciding on your own.

Still, hospitals do keep you waiting

All the same, hospitals really do keep you waiting. Could it not be a little faster? Or is it just Saitama?

The longer you sit in the waiting room, the heavier your mood becomes. My mother gets restless too. I was only accompanying her, and yet I was worn out.

A test, then a consultation. I understand it takes time, but the person waiting cannot relax until the result comes. That may be the hardest part of taking a parent to the hospital.

A Big Mac on the way home, and no room for dinner

It must have been the stress of all that waiting. On the way home I stopped at McDonald’s and ate a Big Mac set. The fact that I write it that way probably means I knew better.

My mother had an iced coffee, a drink after her test. The two of us sat down and finally caught our breath. Because the result was good, the burger tasted better than usual.

And sure enough, once I got home I could not eat dinner. I knew it would happen and did it anyway. Sorry about that, to my wife.

A day with a wide swing

The joy of getting my car back. The relief at the test result. The exhaustion of waiting. And the regret over the Big Mac. It was a day with a very wide swing.

But the part that matters is this: no surgery needed. For today, that is enough.

The monthly hospital visits start next month. I intend to just keep at it, one month at a time.
