Hello, this is gargoyle Kuma.
This is a hard one to write. Bubble, my daughter’s cat, passed away early this morning. He was one year and ten months old.
It happened suddenly, yesterday evening
On August 8th we had the ten-year inspection on our house, and in the afternoon I went to a meetup in Ikebukuro, getting home around five.
My wife had gone over to our daughter’s apartment to look after Bubble. While she was there his condition suddenly turned — he couldn’t walk anymore. They rushed him to a clinic.
There was something seriously wrong with his heart. The left atrium was enlarged.
The vet told us, “I believe his heart had been bad since birth.” It hit me hard.
I kept thinking we should have noticed. The vet said, “There’s no way you could have noticed.”
He never showed a sign of it. He climbed the cat tower, he tore around the house — he seemed perfectly healthy.
A clot had formed in his heart, traveled down, and lodged in a vessel in his lower body. That’s why he suddenly couldn’t walk.
That clinic couldn’t treat it, so we took him to a larger animal hospital. He died early this morning. 😭
One year and ten months. A short life for a cat.
Until yesterday evening it had been an ordinary day. The house inspection, laughing with friends at the meetup, coming home. That it would end at an animal hospital by night, and with a goodbye by morning, never crossed my mind.
So many memories
But we have so many memories. Sleeping in the bed with us.
Watching the world outside with his tail flicking.
Looking back through the photos, I’m surprised how many there are. He was only one year and ten months old, and yet he’s everywhere in the house — on the bed, on the chair, at the window, on the stairs, beside my mother’s bed.
Thank you for all the memories.
What I learned about heart disease in cats
After losing Bubble, I read up on heart disease in cats. I’m writing down what I understood, as a layman, in the hope that it spares someone else.
Cats can develop a condition where the heart muscle thickens. It can happen even in young cats, and you generally can’t tell by looking. A cat can be running around and eating normally while it quietly progresses inside. That was exactly Bubble.
The frightening part is when a clot forms inside the heart, travels, and blocks a large vessel to the hind legs. A cat that was walking normally will suddenly start dragging its back legs. The legs may go cold, or the cat may cry out in pain. That is what happened to Bubble.
And sadly, by that point the options are very limited. So if it’s going to be caught, it has to be caught before that — through a heart murmur heard on a stethoscope, an ultrasound of the heart, or a blood test.
“He’s healthy, so we don’t need the vet” isn’t quite right. Get them looked at while they’re well. If you live with a cat, please consider asking at the next vaccination: “Could you check his heart while we’re here?”
We didn’t notice. The vet told us there was no way we could have — and still, it stings.
Thank you, Bubble
One year and ten months. From a human’s point of view, it was over in a blink.
And still, this house has the cat tower he climbed, the window he watched from, the chair he slept on. We’ll leave them where they are for a while.
Thank you for coming to our daughter, for visiting us, for sitting beside my mother’s bed. It was a short time, but the time Bubble was here was genuinely happy.
Thank you, Bubble. Rest well.
