A 10 km Run That Finished at the Akai Furusato Festival
Hello, this is A-kuman.
On Sunday, October 18, the Akai Furusato Festival was held at Akai Hikawa Shrine, our local shrine. There was not a single cloud in the sky — perfect autumn weather for a festival.
My 10 km run ended at the festival
That morning, I went out for my usual 10 km run. The finish point is always Akai Hikawa Shrine.
Normally it is a quiet shrine, but that day red festival banners lined the road, and the whole place felt completely different. After my run, I spent about 15 minutes watching the festival.
My first festival in a long time
The Akai Furusato Festival is held every year, but it had been a long time since I actually watched it.
In front of the torii gate, many people were wearing matching happi coats with the character for “festival” on the back. Children in baseball caps were lined up too. I could really feel the whole neighborhood coming together to make the festival lively.
The shrine building was decorated with “Akai Hikawa Shrine” lanterns and red-and-white curtains, giving it a bright, festive look.
My wife helped out, and I stayed home with my mother
This year, my wife joined the festival as a volunteer. I did not take part in the festival myself; I stayed home with my mother.
It is thanks to the people who support it that this festival continues every year. To everyone who helped out — thank you for all your hard work.
A day that reminded me what I love about my hometown
The roads I run every day and the shrine I always pass become this lively on festival day. Those 15 minutes felt like a little reward after my run, and reminded me once again how nice my neighborhood is.
Today is the youngest day of the rest of my life. Next year, I hope I can take a little more time to enjoy the festival.
